Eagle Ridge Lodge

This is one of my favorite books. Shortly before I began working on this book, I was driving through Iowa on my way to pick up my son, Jordan, who was visiting my parents who then lived in Northwest Iowa. On the way I drove past an exit sign for a very small rural town - the kind I love - called - that's right - Eagle Ridge. I thought, as I was cruising down the highway, what a great name! Thus we have Eagle Ridge Lodge. I wanted to do a "lodge look" book featuring wool & flannel quilts. I also very much like the Southwest influence with the bold, geometric lines - so dramatic. So I combined the two in this book. I primarily did all my quilts in reds, greens, and tans, with some strong, clear blue accents. You could easily change this basic color scheme in any of the projects to coordinate with your own lodge. When I do a show, one of the favorite pieces from this book is always the Bear Paw quilt shown on the front cover, finished size 29" x 42". The pieced Bear Paw blocks are combined with wool applique trees. The "mountains" at the top & bottom of the quilt are actually Log Cabin blocks which are pieced, then cut in half to form triangles. The quilt is finished off with a dramatic border which repeats this triangular theme. The large quilt to the left of this Bear Paw measures 47" x 69" and features the best of the Southwest geometric designs. Pieced blocks are repeated in horizontal rows, along with narrow strips of solid color. The larger size makes it a dramatic wall hanging or a very usable lap quilt. There are five other quilts ranging from small wall pieces to an afghan-size throw. And pillows - lots of pillows - can't relax in the great room of the lodge without pillows! Techniques include traditional piecing, wool applique, and basic embroidery. The dramatic sunrise design is shown on the back cover in wool and ultra-suede - on a little Log Cabin quilt, a chair back, and on the back yolk of Jess's Tan shirt. Jess is also wearing a black wool jacket (mine!) which features Seminole strip piecing around both sleeves.
